Best mobile phone 2013: 10th Pocket-lint Gadget Awards nominees

article-title

There will always be one category that has everyone fighting, and this year is no different as the competition for best mobile phone returns.
Some excellent handsets have launched this year, from the fabulously designed HTC One to the Apple iPhone 5S with its slo-mo video and Touch ID fingerprint reader. To be nominated for this category, the device needed to have a display size of under 5.3-inches to avoid phablet land, and after much deliberation, consideration and outright arguing we give you the five nominees for the Best Mobile Phone 2013 category. Drum roll please.

Samsung Galaxy S4

null
Samsung announced the addition of its Galaxy S4 to the party in March for £630 SIM-free, and it is a brilliant phone in almost every way. Not only is it powerful, but it also comes with some great new eye tracking and gesture features which show Samsung is continuing to work on unique and interesting features. Some might see them as gimmicky, and even if you don't use all of them, many people will enjoy them.

LG G2

null
LG announced its flagship LG G2 in August for £490 and it came packing a great design, amazing sound output for music and super speedy performance, as well as a good battery life.

Apple iPhone 5S

Apple iPhone 5S

null
Apple has lovers and haters, but like it or not, it creates products that sell in their millions and the Apple iPhone 5S is no exception after being launched in September, costing £549 for the 16GB model. It doesn't have the largest display in the market, nor does it have NFC support, but the 5S is still a phone designed for the future.

HTC One

null
There is no doubt about it, the HTC One, which was announced in February costing £520, is the best phone HTC has ever made. It features a beautiful design, fantastic display, brilliant sound and gets in some great functions too, including the Zoe camera and live gallery.

Nokia Lumia 925

null
The Nokia Lumia 925 brought Nokia into the flagship fight when it was announced in May for £499. It comes with a slim, lightweight design, which we found great to hold, plus we really enjoyed the camera experience this device provides. It's a big step above the previous 920 device.

AT&T to launch the Nokia Lumia 925 next month?

The Nokia Lumia 925 is one of the high-end Nokia Lumia models that allows users to take great photographs in low-light conditions. In the U.S., only T-Mobile has been offering the phone, but this is about to change. A published report on Friday cites two sources as saying that the Lumia 925 will be launched on AT&T in the middle of September. The carrier already exclusively offers the Nokia Lumia 1020 which is equipped with a 41MP rear-facing camera.

The version of the Nokia Lumia 925 to be offered by the nation's second largest carrier will be the black variant and will be priced at $99.99 with a signed two-year pact. Right now, the Nokia Lumia 920 is priced by AT&T at $99.99 on contract, so the price of the former flagship (and another Nokia AT&T exclusive in the U.S.) will most likely be surgically slimmed down to $49.99 on contract. After the launch, AT&T can satisfy those seeking high-end Lumia models (Nokia Lumia 1020, Nokia Lumia 925, Nokia Lumia 920) and those who want a Lumia model but are on a budget (the red hot Nokia Lumia 520)

The Nokia Lumia 925 has a slim body made of aluminum with a back made of polycarbonate. The phone launches with the GDR2/Amber update already installed out of the box which means goodies like Data Sense so you know which apps are using your monthly data allowance, an FM radio, always-on clock and the two-taps to awaken feature among others.

The 4.5 inch 768 x 1280 resolution AMOLED screen results in pixel density of 334 ppi. A dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus processor is under the hood while the Adreno 225 GPU takes care of graphics. 1GB of RAM is on board and there is 16GB of native storage, but no microSD slot available. The rear-facing 8.7MP shooter has an aperture of f/2.0, a setting that allows the camera to take viewable snapshots in low-light conditions. Videos are captured in 1080 x 1920 at 30fps. There is a front-facing 1.2MP snapper aboard and a 2000mAh battery keeps the lights on.

UPDATE: Now that the Nokia Lumia 920 has been cut to $49.99 at AT&T, it certainly looks like the Nokia Lumia 925 will be coming to AT&T, perhaps even sooner than mid September.
